Your Daily Cup Could Be Protecting Your Eyes

Your morning or afternoon cup of tea may be doing a lot more than you realize. Research suggests that regular tea consumption offers meaningful protection against some of the most common — and serious — eye conditions.

Which Teas Are Best for Eye Health?

Not all teas are created equal when it comes to vision. According to Dr. Steven Pratt, M.D., ophthalmologist at the University of California, San Diego, the top choices for eye protection are:

  • Green tea
  • Black tea
  • Oolong tea

These three appear most effective at preventing cataracts and may also offer protection against macular degeneration.

How Tea Protects Against Macular Degeneration

One of the mechanisms behind tea’s benefit is particularly fascinating. Certain compounds in tea may help prevent the abnormal growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye.

Why does that matter? In “wet” macular degeneration — the more severe form of the disease — too many new blood vessels grow beneath the retina. Those vessels leak blood and fluid, causing permanent damage that results in blind spots and serious vision loss. Tea may help interrupt that process before it starts.

The Antioxidant Advantage

Tea is also rich in polyphenols and antioxidants that combat oxidative stress throughout the body — including in the delicate tissues of the eye. The lens and retina are especially vulnerable to oxidative damage over time, which is why antioxidant-rich foods and beverages are so valuable.

How to Get More Tea Into Your Routine

  • Replace one cup of coffee a day with green tea
  • Brew a pitcher of iced tea to keep in the fridge
  • Sip black tea in the afternoon as an energy boost
  • Try oolong tea as a flavorful middle ground between green and black
  • Enjoy herbal infusions alongside green or black tea for variety
