How Much Water Do You Really Need?

Your body is 60-70% water. Every system — from temperature regulation to nutrient transport — depends on proper hydration.

A simple formula: take your body weight in pounds and divide by two. That’s the minimum ounces of water you need daily. A 160-pound person should drink at least 80 ounces. Add more if you exercise, drink alcohol, fly, or live in a dry climate.

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty — by then you’re already dehydrated. Signs include headaches, constipation, joint pain, dark urine, and fatigue. Twenty percent of your water comes from food, but the rest must come from beverages. Pure water is best, though herbal tea and limited 100% juice are acceptable.

Most people are chronically dehydrated without realizing it. Proper hydration alone could prevent or improve many common health complaints. Start tracking your intake today — your body will thank you.
