When Aging Affects the Macula

Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is a common cause of vision loss in older adults. It primarily affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed tasks such as reading, driving, recognizing faces, and seeing fine detail.

 

 

AMD typically affects central vision while leaving peripheral vision relatively intact. Early stages may cause no obvious symptoms, but as it progresses, people may notice blurred or dark spots in the center of vision, distorted straight lines, difficulty reading small print, and less vivid colors.

An early sign can be drusen—small yellow deposits beneath the retina. Small drusen may occur with normal aging, while larger or more numerous deposits can indicate increasing stress on the retinal pigment epithelium and related retinal support structures.

AMD does not have a single cause. It develops through the combined effects of aging, genetics, oxidative stress, inflammation, and environmental influences. Even so, many people with early AMD retain useful vision for years, and continuing research is improving approaches to early detection, prevention, and long-term retinal health.
