Early Signs of Dry Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD)

Dry Macular Degeneration (Dry AMD) often develops slowly, and many people do not notice symptoms in the earliest stages. However, as the disease progresses, several subtle changes in vision may become apparent:

  • Mild blurriness or fuzzy vision in the center of your vision: This can make it harder to see fine details, especially when reading or doing close-up work.
  • Difficulty recognizing faces: Central vision is crucial for facial recognition, and early AMD can make this challenging.
  • Increased need for brighter light: Tasks like reading or sewing may require more illumination than before.
  • Colors appear less vibrant or faded: You may notice that colors seem duller or washed out.
  • Sensitivity to glare: Bright lights may become uncomfortable, and adapting to changes in lighting (such as moving from a bright room to a dark one) can take longer.

  • Delayed dark adaptation: It may take longer for your eyes to adjust when entering a dark room.
  • Decreased contrast sensitivity: Reading letters or objects that are similar in color to their background may become more difficult.
  • Gaps or dark spots in vision: Some people notice missing words or letters when reading, or dark/blind spots (like a smudge) in the center of their vision, especially in the morning.
  • Distortion of straight lines: Lines may appear wavy or bent, although this is more commonly associated with progression to late-stage or wet AMD.
