LED technology has generated many new lighting applications
Toys and even clothes now also incorporate LEDs. Solid state lighting is found in TV screens, computer monitors, smart phones and tablets. Despite the advantages, these new artificial light sources present a high proportion of Blue light from the visible spectrum.
Typically, fluorescent lamps contain 26% blue light, cool white LEDs at least 35% versus only 3% for incandescent lamps. These longer wavelength blue light emissions have been found to be responsibility for increased retinal cell death in studies – retinal cells once killed cannot regenerate. Prolonged blue light exposure has also been found to increase risk of macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness in the western world.

Other studies have found Blue light to predispose individuals to headaches, migraines, eyestrain and visual stress (associated with dyslexia).
Eye specialists now recommend ophthalmic lenses that protect your eyes from UV but also reduce exposure to the blue light too. Studies show they reduce retinal cell death by 20%. They are recommended at for children and adults to protect and maintain eye health and vision.
